The Canyon
I love the Yakima Canyon more than any other place on Earth.
I didn’t realize it until recently, but I find myself at home on its scabby, sage-covered, basalt hills. For nearly five years, I lived in the Canyon near Rosa Dam. I spent many hours climbing the trail less hills around my home.
Joe took me hiking there on Valentine’s Day. Despite frigid winds and threatening skies, we made the 1200 ft ascent from S.R. 820 to the peaks above the dam and found ourselves overlooking a bend in the Yakima River.
It was beautiful.

The Olympics
I spent some time in a rain forest last week trying to find the subtler signs of life. I often spend my time in National Parks searching for photographs of places and things and forget to capture natural moments. The first image is not natural – but it shows just how much life sustaining rain falls on the southern tip of the Olympic National Park. In case you can’t read the “rain gauge,” the record stands somewhere around 17 feet of precipitation.

Art at the Nativity House
The art room at the Nativity House.
done
I had the chance to hang out with some folks at the Nativity House’s art room this week. This is what I made from our time together.
If anyone wants to help out, we are going to the dollar store to get some art supplies for these folks. Let us know if you want in.
Thanks…

Hob-Nob has a new back end
I had a camera set up to shoot the back of the Hob-Nob for the last two weeks. It made a photo every 5 minutes during the days work was being done.
Enjoy!
More on the eagles
Reporter Jeff Mayor and I headed up to Concrete a few weeks ago to check out the bald eagles on the Skagit River and see what else we could find.
See the story Here. Eagles on the Skagit River This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.
The video:
done

With the help of a local guide Wayne Ackerlund we found several bald eagles enjoying the mid-day sun. It was a very cold day on the boat, but the sun was out and the birds didn’t mind. There were even some fisherman trying their luck.
This is the Tech stuff:
I was shooting a Nikon D-3 with a Nikkor 300 2.8 and 1.4x tele-convereter.
The camera was set at 400 ISO with the aperture set at f/4.0 and shutter speed at 1/4000.
I was shooting from a moving boat and wanted to make sure the images were as sharp as I could get them. I also wanted the shallow depth of field the aperture gave me to separate the bird from the background.
Here are some of the other images in the sequence. You may notice the image that ran in the paper had a crop on it. That moving boat made it harder than it may sound to keep the bird in the center of the frame. I tried to use the sequence in the video, but The last three images were too tight for me to successfully organize them for a clip.
Enjoy!
